- Use a staff to feel the bottom before taking a step
- Never wade alone
- Wear a belt to create a seal between you and the wader
- Observe potential dangers down current before beginning your wading
- Walk slowly and carefully
- Wear a flotation device
- If you loose your footing don't fight the current, use it to maneuver towards the bank
